Biography:
Born in Kerala, in a Tamil Iyer family, Vidya Balan made her first debut in a Bengali film Bhalo Theko opposite Joy Sengupta in 2003. This film became a huge success and won her the Anandolak Puraskar Award.
Vidya Balan’s father is the Vice President of the ETC channel while her mother is a homemaker. She also has an older sister called Priya. Vidya studied at St. Anthony’s Convent School in Mumbai and thereafter she obtained a degree in Sociology from St. Xavier’s College.
Vidya worked in a few films in Malyalam and Tamil before she was offered films in Bollywood. But for some reason or the other she was replaced by other actors before she got her first break in Pradeep Sarkar’s Parineeta (2005). Vidya’s role in Parineeta brought her considerable appreciation and instant success. She won the Filmfare Female Best Debut Award and Filmfare Face of the Year for this film.
This was followed by Raj Kumar Hirani’s smashing hit, Lago Raho Munnabhai. Vidya’s role in Guru, where she played the role of a physically disabled woman won her some critical appreciation. Her other recent films include Salaam-e-Ishq, Eklavya and Kismat Konnection. Out of these Eklavya was critically acclaimed and was India’s official entry to the Oscars that year.
Performances in Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyya gave a boost to Vidya’s career. These films were quite successful at the box office. Vidya has also worked in number of ads and music videos. Besides this, she has been also associated with HIV / AIDS campaigns.
Presently, Vidya is working on a project called Chenab Gandhi directed by Vidhu Puri. Nikhil Advani is also directing Vidya in the under production film titled Chand Bhai. Looks like we can expect a lot great upcoming performances from the talented actress in the near future.
