Biography:
Urmila Matondkar entered the film industry at a young age and acted as a child actress in films like Kalyug and Maasoom. She made her first debut in films as an adult actress with the film Bade Ghar Ki Beti. This was followed by a number of performances in several films like Chamaatkar, Narsimha, Drohi, Kanoon, Aa Gale Lag Ja and so on. But most of these films failed commercially. Her work in films was recognized with Ram Gopal Verma’s film Rangeela, where she acted opposite Aamir Khan. In this film, she was portrayed as an aspiring actress. This film brought her acting talent to the fore and from then on there was no stopping her.
Urmila went on to give several hit performances in films such as Judaai, Satya, Jaanam Samjha Karo, Khoobsoorat, Hum Tumpe Marte Hain, Kaun, Kunwara, Lajja, Company and many more. She earned critical appreciation for the film Satya and also won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her terrific performance. She also won this award and many other awards for Best Actress for films like Rangeela, Bhoot and Ek Hasina Thi. Judaai won her the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award, and Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya won her the Star Screen Award for Best Actress.
Her performance in Bhoot was exceptional. In this film, she was portrayed as a woman possessed by a ghost. Her performance in the film Pinjar set in the backdrop of the Partition also earned her some rave reviews. Urmila is also noted for her dancing skills; ‘Chamma Chamma’ from the film China Gate is recognized as her best dance number. Urmila has over the years worked in several genres of films and has continually entertained Indian audiences for over two decades.
