Biography:
Karan Johar is a film director, producer and television celebrity. Son of Hiroo and Yash Johar, Karan was born on 25th May, 1972. A student of H R College of Commerce and Economics, Karan has received a Masters degree in French.
Karan was amply inspired by Indian cinema and was especially stimulated by icons like Raj Kapoor and Yash Chopra. He started his career as an assistant director of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. He selected Shah Rukh’s costumes for this film; he continues with the trend till date and has done so for films like Dil To Pagal Hai, Main Hoon Na, Veer Zara, et al. Dharma Productions is Karan’s production company.
He made his first debut as a director with the film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starring the close buddy SRK, Kajol, Rani and Salman in 1998. The film did incredibly well and won 8 Filmfare awards for Best Director, Best Movie and Best Actor and for all the leading and supporting roles. In 2001, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, another directorial endeavor went on to win 5 Filmfare awards. His other films like Kal Ho Na Ho, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna also managed to do reasonably well.
Karan believes in numerology and that is the reason why his movies always start with ‘K’ and are always a set of 4 words. Apart from films, Karan has been a host for the TV show “Koffee with Karan” where he interviews leading bollywood stars. He has hosted numerous award functions and has also walked the ramp for Rohit Bal’s fashion show. In 2006, he became the first Indian filmmaker to be a jury member of the Miss World Competition in Poland.
In 2007, Karan was elected to be a part of the 250 Global Young Leaders by the World Economic Forum based in Geneva. At present Karan is working on his upcoming movies like Wake Up Sid and My Name is Khan.
