Verdict: A Vision of Reality
Nishikant Kamat's vision combined with super powerful performances by Paresh Rawal and Irfan Khan has made Mumbai Meri Jaan a soul stirring and impressive potrayal of terror afflicted Bombay. The otherwise normal and happy lives of many are drastically altered by serial Mumbai blasts in local trains. The scene of Mumbai blasts are the closest to reality possible - they show the brilliance of director and his vision. Though disturbing, the scenes leave a lasting impact on you. And so begins the movie with a promise to be different and to some extent even lives up to it. Overall the movie is as close to reality as could be possible - in fact disturbingly so. And the realism has been handled by much sensitivity and subtlety, as normally missing from most Bollywood films. My only complaint with the movie is that it tried to tackle way too many issues in a two and a half hour film. The impact of individual stories and the super performances of likes of Paresh and Irfan got diluted by too many themes, too many parallel stories and too much happening in one small film. I really wish Kamat had limited to just as much as could be digested in a short span of time. And by the time it reaches climax, the movie ends up being a cliched tribute to national integration and bhaichara. But nevertheless the message is well delivered and excellently voiced by Paresh Rawal. The movie is a must watch for all those who are a fan of real cinema - cinema that talks and walks through disturbing issues, but yet leaves you with a hope in the end, paying homage to spirt and never die attitude of Mumbai. The movie would be much empathised by all Mumbaikers. A great attempt - I am looking fwd to more of interesting cinema from the director.

..... Kammat's direction is Hercules-strong, be it while depicting the blasts or the charade played by a tea vendor in Tamil Nadu....
